Chicago and the Visual Arts

Volume One in the Quest for World Class Series

Volume One in the Quest for World Class Series

It is in the Visual Arts where Chicago has received the least amount of national recognition. There has never been a Chicago artist considered tantamount to the Masters of the East much less to the Masters of the Old World. Yet in the realm of popular culture Chicago’s artists have made significant contributions.

  • The American imagery of Santa Claus was created in Chicago

  • Much of the modern American comic was developed in Chicago

  • The cover imagery for the 20th century magazine was pioneered in Chicago

  • At mid-20th century New York was the art capital of the New World but Chicago was the Pin-Up capital of the entire World.

And then it ended. To understand why, read Volume One, Chicago’s Visual Arts, in the Quest for World-Class series. For the print version in paperback, take the link to our
